Mountain Goat Blog

If you’ve ever climbing indoors and not hated it, you’re going to love these photos. Today we got half a ton of So Ill Climbing holds delivered. We were wondering if it would be enough, until we realized they wouldn’t all fit into one photo.

We’re getting close!

It’s official! Everything passed inspection with the city this morning and we’re good to use the space to run a climbing gym. Thanks for all the prayers and help! We’re finishing up some last few details and getting this thing ready for January (and a party in December!)

More photos of some awesome volunteers working and more glimpses of the wall.

Cruise on over to the facebook page to check out more, and be ready for some awesomeness on Monday!

Check out our buddy Zach Suggs working on the front-desk/check-in area yesterday.
The building permit is good to go and we’re underway on construction. We should have some progress shots to show soon, so keep checking here and our facebook.

Look what showed up yesterday! That’s all for us. It’s about time to get crackin’…

Here’s the first sneak peak! Thanks to our good friend Sandy Gibbes, we’ve got some fancy renderings of what the place will eventually look like. Of course, we can’t show you the whole thing just yet.
We’ve only got 4 days left (including today) to maximize our matching grant, so help us spread the word. This website is the new permanent home of the climbing gym, so pass it around and help us raise this last little bit! Pass it around - http://gtrps.org/mWIHg5 - and let’s make this thing happen!

This Monday, on Labor Day, we were supposed to take a group of 20 international students from Furman University on a rafting trip on the Nantahala River.

Because the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee were aimlessly meandering up the southeastern United States, we spent most of last week discussing with the staff from Furman University whether or not we would still be able to lead the trip.

We called around and looked at some other options, but decided late Saturday night that Monday’s weather would not be ideal for taking a group rafting. We would be in heavy rain and thunderstorms all day and the weather would be terribly cold to be exposing the students to 42 degree water.

We made the right call, as you can see by our destination marked by the red pin above but it’s unfortunate that our students had to miss out on this opportunity.

We wanted to share this with you as it’s a great reminder of the need for our indoor climbing facility. If we had the space available, last week would have been much easier on our staff as well as Furman’s and this storm wouldn’t have been an issue at all. We could have easily waited until Monday morning to decide on our weather plan, and could have seamlessly executed an indoor climbing trip.

We just wanted to share this as a practical (and very timely) example of our desire for this space for everyone who has already generously supported our project, as well as those who will in the coming weeks.

Wont you join us - http://www.goattrips.org/climbingwall

That’s right - today we’re launching our fundraising campaign to make this space a reality. For the next 30 days we have an opportunity to have all donations towards this project matched (up to $15,000 worth).

One of the coolest things about this project is the fact that it’s a real investment - once this space is up and running, it will pay to keep itself open from public revenues, and potentially generate revenues to allow more kids to share in the experience for free.

We hope you’ll join us in making this happen. This project has the potential to not only open up an incredible climbing gym in Greenville, but to serve countless under-resourced and at-risk kids in our community.

You guessed it, this is the spot. It doesn’t look like much yet, because there’s plenty of work yet to be done.
We’re just a little giddy, so we had to show you something. We’ll show more of the space as we get closer to construction, and plenty of in progress shots as we’re building.
For now, you’ll just have to imagine everything.
